The Campaign

The S line style special edition includes exclusive equipment features that give every Audi model an even higher quality and makes it thus more valuable. And what is valuable, attracts thieves at great desire. A spot in a spectacular action epic manner that shows – in an engaging storyline – the desirability of this special equipment and at the same time highlighting "The Truth in Engeneering".

Creative Execution

The main technical challenge on Audi ‘Coup’ was to integrate CGI helicopters, cars and set extensions into a live action environment. This was made even more demanding because the shots were a combination of real helicopters and CG ones. Having the live action shots gave us the best reference possible but it also meant there was no compromising. There were three main VFX stages. The first was to create two photorealistic helicopters, a Huey and a Chinook. This was achieved using Mudbox. Maya, Vray, and the final composite in Nuke. The second stage was to create a takeover from the live action car transporter to a CG one. This involved remodelling supplied CAD data from Audi. We used Mudbox. Maya, Vray, and the final composite in Nuke. The final challenge was to double the size of the aircraft hanger at the end of the commercial. Again, we used Mudbox. Maya, Vray, and the final composite in Nuke. The overall approach was to try and shoot as much as we could as live action and to use VFX to enhance the shots. This worked really well to achieve the realism we needed.
