The Campaign

We see a man sitting in a café, with his wife, staring at cars passing by. He follows a couple of cars and his mind starts to drift away. He thinks to himself “If I see a blue convertible, we will travel the world together." Nearby, a white car is parked and a guy on the phone jumps out and starts walking. Behind him, the car starts rolling down. He clearly forgot to pull the handbrake. He tries to stop it, but is too late. Gaining speed the car crosses a busy intersection. It enters a big warehouse with stacks of paint. It hits a stacked wall of paint buckets and is entirely covered in dripping blue paint. It leaves the warehouse through the shopfront and hits a parked trailer truck just out side. The car is squeezed under the trailer of the truck and the roof is ripped of completely. Silently the car perfectly stops in front of the cafe. We see the now roofless car, with dripping blue paint outside the cafe. The man notices this miracle with a frozen, enlightened look on his face. VO: “Don't count on luck to make your dreams come true. Come visit Nagelmackers

Creative Execution

Since the movie is about action, we decided to shoot anamorphic. To add speed and dynamics, we used zoom lenses. Thanks to this, we have some on screen zooms. The lenses are angenieux with anamorphic back lens (29-290 becoming 48-580). The end of the lens was used for close-ups to have a nice bokeh. To give the film a real life feel, the grip shook with the battery to add little 'shakes' in the picture whilst the DOP was filming. These small details create a 'messy' action effect. Since we wanted to dramatize the stunts, we filmed 200fps in Alexa mini in combination with Cooke S2/S3. The exterior scenes were shot with available light during the right time of the day. To add warmth to the bar scene, we used 40W lights with long filament and further reinforced the effect with a 5K tungsten in the ceiling. This all resulted in a soft rim/back light. The close up of the person in the bar is shot with a 580mm. Thanks to that, the reflection of the cars passing by became slightly unclear and adds a dreamy effect. As a final result, the film breathes action in a dreamy atmosphere.
