Brief Explanation

The largest challenge of the project was the actual typeface. Comic Sans is a horrible typeface with many negative associations. We wanted to create a memorable and beautiful poster; a poster that would be chosen by the judges but also generate a commercial appeal at the exhibition.

The Brief

Our brief was to create a poster celebrating the 20th anniversary of the typeface Comic Sans. The brief was handed out to the best designers in the world. Our brief said that the best posters would be selected for an exhibition in London where all sales proceeds would go to Cancer Research UK.

How the final design was conceived

We started the project with 4 days of total anxiety. We procrastinated. We were all out of ideas. We asked ourselves: what can we do with the "worst" typeface in the world? What can we do that celebrates the typeface? What can we do that will be perceived as an attractive and beautiful poster? What can we do that people will want to hang on their wall. With one hour until deadline lightning struck. The idea was there. We had said no to Comic Sans for 20 years. We decided to say yes by transforming ‘NO’ to ‘20’.

Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market

Our poster got selected and exhibited at The Proud Archivist in London. The exhibition was a success and the show raised over £ 5,500 in poster sales for cancer research.
