Brief Explanation

CAP48 is a non-profit organisation that fights to improve the integration of disabled persons into society.

The Brief

For most Belgian children, primary school starts on the first of September. But for a huge number of disabled children, this isn’t the case. Most normal schools aren’t adapted to their handicaps; and these children would greatly benefit from growing up amongst their non-handicapped friends in typical schools. Cap48 wanted these children to be heard.

How the final design was conceived

We used the shape of a classic school bell that was abstracted in form but still kept instantly recognisable. This turned the bell it a visual symbol for our campaign. The bell was first designed and modeled using 3D software. Then we used “polamide” as material for the 3D printed parts. The polamide gave the bell a matte finish and a finely grained texture. Thanks to the high quality 3D printing technique the CAP48 headline was also embossed around the bell shape. The electronics of the bell together with the speaker were put in an enclosure made of maple wood with slightly rounded edges. The aluminum front panel was perforated for better sound acoustics. On the front panel a button was mounted that triggers one of the recorded messages of the disabled children.

Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market

The unique School bell was specially designed for the Minister. At a press conference, the children offered the unique school bell to Joëlle Milquet, the Belgian Minister of Education. Our creative lobby-technique worked. Shortly after the campaign, the Minister announced that, apart from 6 schools that were already in planning, an additional 8 schools would be adapted, with more to come.
