Brief Explanation

UEFA is the governing body of European football and the umbrella organisation for 54 national football associations across Europe. UEFA oversees the Champions League competition - football’s most prestigious club tournament and the world’s largest annual sporting event. UEFA’s stated mission for the Champions League is to provide the ultimate stage for Europe’s club championship and to give fans the best club football competition in the world.

The Brief

The brief was to create an all-encompassing identity for the UEFA Champions League, including a creative concept ‘big’ enough to provide a platform for marketing activities undertaken by broadcasters, clubs and sponsors. The creative concept needed to communicate the brand values of prestige and excellence and the brand essence, ‘THE BEST OF THE BEST ON THE ULTIMATE STAGE’.

How the final design was conceived

We proposed that the ’Ultimate Stage’ would be visualised as an epic stadium with a starball roof incorporating the client’s logo. Early visuals were presented to panels of stakeholders and fans and their feedback incorporated. A CGI model of the stadium was built, incorporating 2,148,000 individual objects and a crowd of 1,050,000 achieved by live-action replication. A set of high resolution renders were created, for use in broadcast, print and digital communications. The identity was presented to end-users in a printed style guide designed to inspire creative and successful application of the brand.

Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market

The identity has been activated, on a voluntary basis, by a huge number of the UEFA’s broadcasters, partners, licensees and clubs. This has resulted in a widespread brand presence for the competition across the world’s media channels.
