Brief Explanation

Together with partner Air France, KLM is at the forefront of the European airline industry. Offering reliability and a healthy dose of Dutch pragmatism, 32,000 KLM employees work to provide innovative products for their customers and a safe, efficient, service-oriented operation with a focus on sustainability. KLM strives to achieve profitable growth that contributes to both its own corporate aims and to economic and social development.

The Brief

KLM has been number 1 in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index as the most sustainable airline for ten successive years. In their newest World Business Class sustainability and eco-friendly solutions are at the core of the design. The objective was to show how pragmatic and solution-driven KLM is when it comes to implementing sustainability and innovation.

How the final design was conceived

KLM started a huge operation to totally refurbish their World Business Class cabins to a new design by Dutch Design icon Hella Jongerius. With over 100 airplanes getting refurbished, a huge amount of used interiors was left over. We decided to create new and relevant products out of these interiors.

Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market

High-profile students from the renowned Design Academy Eindhoven worked for six months on creating new and interesting travel products using at least 80% of their material from the former plane interior. Dutch Designers were involved in coaching and judging their final work.
