The Campaign

After the attack on Charlie Hebdo in France, Reporters Without Borders had to make it absolutely clear to the world that there is no freedom without free press. And free press, that includes cartoons as well. So Reporters Without Borders stood up for cartoonists everywhere by showing us the strange reality of a world without any cartoonists at all. Starting from the question what it would be like to stop cartoonists from creating drawings, we created the audiocartoons: cartoons described by nothing more than the cartoonists voice. No ink or paper, which results in a strange blend highlighting the importance of cartoons. Each artist would describe in the finest detail how its drawing would like if you could actually see it. Because if cartoonists can’t express their opinions anymore with paper and ink, what’s next? Our artists (well known cartoonists of Belgium’s biggest newspapers) where videotaped telling the story of their cartoons. On our dedicated website we displayed the gallery containing all audiocartoons and supported them with our claim for freedom: We will never let it come to this.
