The Brief
Turkcell wants to start a bigger social change by targeting the youth. And beyond that all people with smartphones who are active on social networks. The goals are to increase awareness of the condition amongst the general population as well as for actual patients improve treatment compliance, motivation and reduce long-term effects of diabetes. It has been trialed for 1.5 years at Istanbul University and was rolled out in Turkey in April 2015.
Creative Execution
The critical factor here is connection - bringing people the tools they need to track their daily life on the go and enabling good communication between patients and physicians. We saw a clear way for Turkcell mobile technology to facilitate the vast data collection that’s required for people to manage their condition – by collecting accurate and timely information on a day-to-day basis. Then it’s all safely stored in the cloud, linking our products and services with our customers. As Turkey’s largest telecoms provider we felt we were well positioned to offer a solution since we offer connectivity by default.
It all started in 2012 when we commissioned a medical study into the effects of remote tracking on diabetes patients’ health. Conducted by the Medical Faculty of Istanbul University, the study measured the influence of tracking via our M2M-empowered gateway and bluetooth enabled glucose meter. It proved that with ease-of-use, accuracy and timeliness, mobile health technologies close the gap between physician and patient.
The solution has been tested in a year-and-a-half long trial with 200 patients at Istanbul University. The results have exceeded expectations. Treatment compliance increased by 54%, blood sugar levels decreased by 27%, and complication forecasts decreased by 37%.
Healthmetre is the latest element in our ongoing mobile health development stream, with a focus on chronic disease management.
