Creative Execution
When users enter the echoesoftsunami.com website, they find themselves in Banda Aceh, a city in Indonesia that was entirely destroyed by the tsunami. The area is quiet and peaceful, life has returned back to normal since the terrible events. After few seconds, the users are asked to close their eyes to let memories surround them. Thanks to a face tracking technology, the webcam detects the eye movement and 2014 slowly turns back to 2004. Keeping their eyes closed, the users can hear waves crashing on the shore, screams and uproar; they immerse into the survivors' memories through sound only.
This immersive experience ends with a chronology of Action Against Hunger's actions over the past ten years, including numerous media and adding to this interactive tribute a necessary awareness-raising speech. Echoes of Tsunami digital experience spread the word on social media and generated high amount of donations to support Action Against Hunger interventions.
On December 26th 2004, a devastating tsunami destroyed the Indian Ocean shores, striking mainly Indonesia and Sri Lanka, killing 230,000 people and leaving 1.5 million homeless. Videos of the tsunami were all over the international news media. On TV, in the newspapers, on the Internet, these terrible images were everywhere to be seen and they still are today, ten years after the catastrophe. That is why Action Against Hunger NGO is organising an innovative commemoration based exclusively on sound: Echoes of Tsunami. 10 years later, Action Against Hunger wanted to pay tribute to the victims of the catastrophe in order to provide long-term support and keep helping local populations. The creative idea was to engage users thanks to interactive digital experience to bring their memories flooding back, without using shocking images, and highlight a decade of Action Against Hunger interventions in that part of the world.
