Creative Execution
The solution was to built a custom 20ft multi-touch supported screen, displaying over 3500 works by over 750 artists. The installation loops through both artist specific pieces and artistic movements, with full HD images and video accessible at users fingertips. Tate are able to easily update the timeline with new pieces of art and artists’ information as it comes into the gallery.
Situated on Level 0 in the Clore Learning Centre, the Timeline acts as an entry point to many Tate Modern visitors (of which there are 5.3m per year). Locations of paintings on display are also featured, allowing the screen to become an intuitive, interactive site map for all ages.
The Tate Modern wanted to give their Timeline a digital update, with interactivity and beautiful design at the heart of the brief. Tate wanted the new digital timeline to act as an entry point for visitors to spark their interest and allow members of the public to find specific pieces of art within the gallery.
