The Brief
Challenge:
"Creating awareness about the growing European refugee crisis."
Strategy:
When curious people use the new Google feature "Google Fortunetelling", they will be confronted with the harsh reality that their questions about their own future, are less important than the harrowing questions refugees have right now.
Campaign Success
The only thing we bought is the conveniently URL ( www.betagoogle.com ). We posted the hoax on our Facebook wall and asked friends to share it on their walls. In a short period of time, people started sharing the hoax on social media worldwide and the campaign went viral.
Describe the success of the promotion with both client and consumer including some quantifiable results
At the day we released the campaign, we reached 599.169 unique visitors on the website.
After 2 weeks we reached 1.924.811 unique visitors, 366.237 Facebook likes, shares & comments and 19.981 tweets.
In addition to these numbers, a couple of major newspapers (Chicago tribune, The Wall street journal, The Chronicle, Huffington post, Time etc.) wrote about Google Fortunetelling. But the most important thing: we created worldwide awareness about the refugee crisis.
Explain why the method of promotion was most relevant to the product or service
With this campaign we wanted to create awareness about the growing European refugee crisis. We activated people to spread the word about this hoax to let it go viral worldwide.
