The Brief

The problem: We’re not top of mind by students in our country and we’re not very well known abroad, so not many students from abroad apply for an internship. And we didn’t have any money to spend on media. The goal was simple: make sure as many ad students as possible from all over the world recognise Havas Boondoggle Amsterdam as a creative agency in the Netherlands. Make sure they know we’re looking for interns, so they come to us.

Campaign Success

Since you have to eat, breathe and sleep advertising if you want to make it in this industry, we figured: let’s offer students a place to learn and a place to sleep. So we posted our agency on the (social) platform Airbnb. As planned, our video that announced we were looking for interns and that they could apply via Airbnb attracted the attention of leading ad magazines, blogs and social influencers in the industry. We got a total of 561 articles on industry news sites and influencer tweets, now rising to more than 7,5 million impressions and still counting. Curious as they are, ad students read the leading industry magazines and blogs. And so we made sure many, many ad students in the world heard about Havas Boondoggle Amsterdam and found their way to our office.

Describe the success of the promotion with both client and consumer including some quantifiable results

Until now we got a total of 561 articles on industry news sites and influencer tweets, leading to more than 2 million impressions, now rising to more than 7,5 million impressions and still counting. And we got more than 195 applications from students all over the world.

Explain why the method of promotion was most relevant to the product or service

In the Netherlands, every agency is looking for interns, and if possible from abroad. Most agencies post messages on Facebook and and advertisements on intern job boards. We’re not top of mind by students in our country and we’re not very well known abroad. So there are not many foreign ad students calling us. We had to find a way to become known and interesting in the industry outside The Netherlands. We didn’t have any money to spent on media, so we had to be smart and use the new (social) platforms in a relevant and striking way. We found another way to search and hire ad students. By posting our agency on Airbnb we made ourselves stand out from our competitors. We gave a new meaning to an existing (social) platform. Suddenly ad students from all over the world knew us. We became an interesting agency and made students come to us.
