The Campaign

Together with users and famous musicians, we turn the sounds icebergs produce while melting into real songs – the Iceberg Songs. Using the power of Sound Design, we stage them in an innovative way. By creating an audiovisual experience with the icebergs, we move them from the arctic right into peoples’ minds and souls. With this inspired approach, we make it possible for people to access this huge topic, and relate to the issue emotionally.

Creative Execution

Arctic scientists recorded the sounds of melting icebergs by using special underwater microphones. In collaboration with international musicians and artists, we turned these sounds into music. Every artist integrated the sound of the melting icebergs individually und gave his song a personal note. We collected a wide range of different styles–from electronic music to classic. On our interactive website icebergsongs.com, we merged the songs with moving 360° images in dramatic, dark tonality. Thanks to innovative WebGL technology, users get the impression of moving among icebergs while they listen to them, and gain a first hand feeling of what is happening in the far away arctic.

Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market

Since the start of the World Climate Conference, people have been listening to the Iceberg Songs for over 1000 hours. Spending time with the consequences of the climate change has never been so pure and fascinating. But not only listeners got convinced about the idea of the Iceberg Songs. International musicians like Trentemøller, Marc Houle or the Patent Orchestra were happy to contribute to the project by creating their own songs. With them sharing the songs to their fan community, leading media channels and newspapers reporting about our idea and our own social media channels, we reached people from all over the world without any media budget whatsoever. In two years, everyone who had been involved in our project worked completely pro bono. The only one who gained any profit from it was the fight against climate change.

We want to address as many people as possible all over the world as individually as possible. So it’s not our responsibility for the sound design that makes the idea special: it’s our users. Everybody can download the sounds from our site and people design their very own song with them, among them internationally famous musicians. These vibrant sound designs invite users to stay on our interactive website and experience the mesmerizing Iceberg Songs. We believe that the fusion of sounds and visuals transports our message in a different and appealing way – and is more effective than spreading fear or judging peoples’ behavior. Therefore, our interactive website becomes the central platform for the Iceberg Songs. Users immerse in an abstract world, which makes them experience the melting icebergs vividly and reminds them of the urge of fighting global warming.
