Brief Explanation
„The Fan“ is the story of a passionate football fan, following his team via ICE train throughout the season. We see typical snippets of his fan life: moments of tension, euphoria, desperation and exhaustion. He breathes football. In the stands, at home – or on the way to and from a game. From time to time there are little hints that our fan is special - like the way he cheers rather intimately when the rest of the stadium explodes. In the last scene we understand that our fan is not only a fan. He’s in a relationship with one of the players who awaits him at the train platform.
Execution
Directing this film we faced two main challenges. One: Telling the believable story of a passionate football fan – who is at the same time different from all the other fans. For example, he’s mostly travelling on his own – when he meets fans of his team, he feels rather awkward and displaced. When the whole stadium explodes in euphoria, his joy is deeper, more intimate. When a player gets hurt on the field, he’s not angry, but worried. Etc. Two: Telling a 100% believable reunion of a gay couple with two heterosexual actors. Shortly put: directing those emotional nuances was one of the main keys to make this film work.
