1 THE STARFIGHTER
FABRIEKSTRAAT 38, LINT
The Lockheed Starfighter F-104 which can be seen perched in all its glory on the AED Studios car park is a powerful symbol of man’s age-old dream to fly and, by extension, the power of our imagination in general. Because imagination is a key ingredient at the largest media complex in the Benelux! By 2017, passers-by will be able to see a giant hand – perhaps King Kong’s? – emerging from the surrounding water and grasping the aeroplane. But for now, you will just have to use your own imagination…
2 BART THE BEARDED DRAGON
DUIVENSTRAAT 94, MECHELEN
The bearded dragon is an Australian desert lizard. And Nadia almost scared herself half to death when her daughter brought the specimen home one day around 6 months ago. Not in the least because Bart, as he has since been named, has turned out to be a crazed hysteric! The reptilian inhabitant of Mechelen has since become so tame that he lets his owners know when he wants to come out of or go back into his terrarium. He’s not too fond of the cold but when the weather’s fine, you can see Bart perched on the shoulders of his mistress as she goes for her morning walk. And when the temperatures drop, there’s a good chance he’ll be hiding beneath her coat…
3 WINGED VICTORY
AARSCHOTSTRAAT 6, SINT-JOOST-TEN-NODE
This statue of the Wing Victory was inspired by the Nike of Samothrace. Note, if you will, the figure’s mighty wings and the aura of tenacity and triumph that radiates from this Greek goddess. She most likely figured as the none-too-subtle mascot of the insurance company, ‘Noord-Brabant’ that was established here during the first half of the 20th century. No matter what lowly practices may have since gone on beneath her feet, however, her dignity remains intact from her lofty position above it all.
