Why is this work relevant for Creative Data?

Turkish Airlines is flying to more than 307 destinations around the world and it is the only airline that flies to more than 300 destinations. Taking this broad flight network as a starting point, we wanted to design an application that shows Turkish Airlines’ live flights real time. This application is installed on a 65” touchscreen monitor. One can track the flights en route, search destinations through the search block and review current offers on the world map. This application is reflected on a touchscreen monitor. Users of this application can interact with the world map by touching the screen.

Background

When Turkish Airlines was redesigning their sales office concept, they asked us to create an application aiming to enriching in-store experience. They also wanted this application to be a reflection of their worldwide growth story. Flying to more countries than any other airline, Turkish Airlines’ hundreds of airplanes travel over a million of miles every day. We wanted to make use of this wide network and created an interactive application depicting all of the Turkish Airlines’ airplanes in real time and with exact positions on the world map. We have gathered the data from various channels in a single platform and reflected it on the live interactive screen. The application also enables users to look through all the destinations Turkish Airlines is flying to, and draw routes on the map. It inspires users by giving brief information on destinations and helps them plan their next travel routes.

Describe the idea/data solution

This application has started with the idea of representing Turkish Airlines’ flight network. Turkish Airlines is already one of the largest airline companies and its flights creating a certain amount of data each moment. We have imagined an interactive flight tracking application which is devoted to Turkish Airlines only. After collecting the unique flight data of the airline, we have transferred these piles of data into an interactive world map. This way the customers of the airline could also grasp the brand’s flight patterns.

Describe the data driven strategy

Turkish Airlines, flying to more than 300 destinations, has one of the broadest flight networks. However, saying this out loud is not enough. We had to come up with a creative data driven solution letting people to see all about real time flights, check for destinations and receive offers. Flight routes including legged flights, flight durations, weekly flight frequencies, exact point of the plane, destinations and offers data are pulled, filtered and visualized on a real time world map. The in-store experience of the customers is enhanced. Customers visiting Taksim Sales Office had a chance to interact with Turkish Airlines’ flight activities.

Describe the creative use of data, or how the data enhanced the creative output

Turkish Airlines claims to have one of the broadest flight network, flying more than 300 destinations. The idea behind Flight Tracker App is to show this broad network to people. To do so, we analyzed the flight, route, destinations and offers data and discover ways to visualize all these information on a real time world map effectively. Flight Tracker app is developed with React JS. Everyday lots of people are visiting Turkish Airlines Taksim Sales Office to buy tickets or to get information about destinations. We placed Flight Tracker interactive touch screen to Sales Office to provide an enhanced in-store experience. The application also enables users to look through all the destinations Turkish Airlines is flying to, and draw routes on the map. It inspires users by giving brief information on destinations and helps them plan their next travel routes. It is possible to take a glance at the current offers, too. Using the QR code created for each offer, customers are also directed to the Turkish Airlines’ website/mobile application from their own devices, if they wish to take advantage of a specific deal.

List the data driven results

Everyday lots of people are visiting Turkish Airlines Taksim Sales Office to buy tickets or to get information about destinations. We placed Flight Tracker interactive touch screen to Sales Office to provide an enhanced in-store experience. The brand’s flight network is promoted and transferred to the customers directly on an interactive world map. Users of this application are directed to Turkish Airlines’ website by using QR codes. This feature of the application has contributed to Turkish Airlines’ mobile ticket sales. Momentarily 300 flights are shown on the map. Daily 30 offers are published. Total use of the application is 2 hours daily. This interactive application is currently set up at Taksim Sales Office, Istanbul. It will soon be installed in other sales offices as well.
