Why is this work relevant for Innovation?

Historians and scientists worked for months on end, compiling data about Louis XIV voice. Thankfully he was heavily monitored throughout his life and every little detail about him was written down in his medical journal. The data was then ran through a voice simulation program and synthetic speech experts were able to recreate the voice of Louis XIV. Journalists were then able to interview the King speaking directly to him.

Background

To create conversations around the launch of the new TV series 'Versailles' by showing how true the series is to historic reality.

Describe the idea

For the launch of the third season of the Canal+ series Versailles we recreated the voice of King Louis XIV (dead for 300 years) so that he could give his opinion on the series inspired by him, and talk with journalists and fans of the series. The voice of Louis XIV could be heard on different television sets and influencers were able to interview him. Fans of the series could also ask the king questions on Twitter.

What were the key dates in the development process?

Brief - Jan 2018 First voice test - Feb 2018 Historical research - Jan 2018 - March 2018 Voice creation - March 2018 AI development - March 2018 Live and interview (Youtube and television) - April 2018

Describe the innovation/technology

We created a synthetic voice using specific phonemes, diphones. The initial corpus was extended with paralinguistics which created a more human voice. Leveraging google technology, the AI was able to understand questions from journalists and to answer to them. The king was also present on Social Network and answered directly to people on Twitter through a specific hashtag. (https://twitter.com/LouisXIV_CANAL)

Describe the expectations/outcome

Over 15 million French people heard the voice of their greatest king for the first time Over 2000 people were able to address him directly by asking him a question on Twitter.
