Write a short summary of what happens in the film

The story of a couple losing their dear dog, Frekkel, and what they would give up to find him. This is a beautiful and cinematic story - about love, misunderstanding, redemption - and what anyone will do to get their hands on a New Year's Staatsloterij Lottery ticket. All the ingredients are there for a funny, moving and unexpected film. Who are the heroes, who are the villains, and why do they do what they do? Sometimes the heroes become the villains, and vice versa. When Frekkel's owner says he will surround himself with beautiful things, of course he doesn't mean he will get rid of Frekkel, but Frekkel is insecure - he's quite aware he's not the best-looking dog - so he takes it personally and decides to run away.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

The Staatsloterij is a famous Dutch lottery, besides the usual tickets every ten months they have special prizes for different holidays. The biggest of them all being the New Years Draw with a grand prize of € 30,000,000, a prize big enough for people to show their true colors.

Tell the jury anything relevant about the direction. Do not name the director.

The director realised early in the writing that the problem usually lies in the beginning of the film, the set-up, the psychology of the characters and the way this takes us on a journey with them. He wanted to create something that made us think about what’s really important, our conceptions of beauty and vulnerability; there should always be a lesson to learn. The idea that the initial perspective of the characters presented is shifted towards the end to show the true nature of human beings is what makes it so unique. A new layer to “don’t judge a book by its cover”, including that of our ‘ugly’ dog protagonist. Even with a trained dog you can’t get the exact facial expressions you need for each moment in the film but our Frekkel’s sweet face was key in the success of the film, being able to steal everyone’s hearts.
