Please tell us about the cultural insight that inspired the work
27th July 1989 was an important day for the Hungarians: the wire-fence cutting at the Austro-Hungarian border meant the collapse of the infamous “Iron Curtain” and communism, giving birth to democracy in Hungary.
Since the story of Rododendron happens on that historic day, focusing on "the last spark" of communist regime before it burns away forever, we wanted to re-create the emotional state of those times that all Hungarian felt then: uncertainty, fear and bleakness.
The red star (symbol of communism) is a well-known icon; Our image is black&white to express that atmosphere; only the head of the match is RED. The white lines suggest monotony and suppression, referring to the faceless power of communism.
The idea was to show not the front, but the BACK of that badge, attached to a single matchstick, symbolizing the last spark of communism, creating a poetic reference to the theme of the film.
