Write a short summary of what happens in the film

Guilt Gifts Puppetry is the first experiential theatre series whose protagonists are actual toys donated by real victims of domestic violence. Guilt gifts are usually offered to women caught in abusive relationships to buy their silence and prevent them from reporting their drama to the authorities. Across eight plays, a teddy bear, a bee, a giraffe, an elephant, a monkey, and a zebra, a kitten and an octopus voiced by famous Romanian actors who volunteered next to dancers and visual designers, tell real stories of abuse in order to inspire women to not fall in the same traps and to stop postponing reaching out for help. Each story focuses on a different type of domestic abuse, from physical violence to mental abuse, from sexual attacks to financial abuse and restraining personal access, so that our audience becomes fully aware and picks up the courage to seek help.

Please tell us how the brand purpose inspired the work

ANAIS Association, the leading Romanian NGO fighting against domestic abuse, was set up in 2011 to drive change in Romanian society by promoting women’s rights. They are actively involved in changing policies and legislation to the benefit of women. Domestic violence had registered a surge during the pandemic, as abusers spent more time in contact with their victims, and the ensuing economic crisis made things worse. However, as this was a topic that sparked quite a low interest in Romania, our biggest challenge was how to address the subject of violence from a fresh angle. We discovered that abusers use various types of gifts to buy the forgiveness and silence of the victims so they wouldn’t report the abuse to the authorities. This phenomenon is called „guilt-gifting”. ANAIS turned these gifts into storytellers for change, to raise awareness about this dangerous practice and raise funds to help victims.
