Write a short summary of what happens in the film
The film portrays workers in the three biggest industries for Estonians, Lithuanians, Romanians and Bulgarians coming to work in Norway: Construction, restaurant/hospitality and the fishing industry. Through slightly absurd situations, we see how our main characters in each industry observe how they obviously are missing out on something, and how their colleagues are getting twice as much as they are.
Please tell us about the social behaviour that inspired the work
Through extensive research we learned a lot about these workers:
We knew which industries they came for, and how their potential employers think and act. Meaning that the workers are not unsolicitedly made aware of their rights, and that their respect for authorities prevents them from asking or making enquiries about this.
We learned that most of them have no higher education and hardly speak English. How they mainly engage with each other, but that they hardly ever speak about salaries. We knew their media habits and how they stay updated on news and family and friends back home. And we knew how the different nationalities were similar in some things, but different in others.
But the main we learned, being common for all the nationalities, was that money is their key motivation for coming here. And unless they feel something is in it for them, they will not listen.
