Write a short summary of what happens in the film

Our video takes us into the privacy of an autocrat and shows, that they are only humans, too. We see an old sleepless man, obviously worried by the news on TV and the happenings outside. Later we reveal that it’s the news that keep him awake and that he’s not the average old man, but an autocrat.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

As an international broadcaster reaching out to 249 million people worldwide weekly, DW realizes that the press plays a major role in leading the fight against autocrats and totalitarian regimes, where people and the press are silenced or censored. Our dedication for unbiased news and tools against censorship hopefully mean bad nights to autocrats.

Tell the jury anything relevant about the cinematography.

Our spot airing in over 25 languages, in over 60 countries from the US to Indonesia we did not want to show the autocrat in full detail as skin color and looks of local autocrats vary a lot. Director Jan Gleie and DoP Niels Thastum came up with the idea of a really dark and mystic atmosphere and wide shots, that give the palace enough room to shine. The really reduced camera movement would also allow us to get very intimate with the autocrat.
