Brief Explanation
Marketed like a feature film in France (posters, trailers, etc.) and broadcast on the web and in cinemas, "The Berryfly Effect” or in French "L'Effet Papayon” is a four-episode series for the No. 2 soft drink brand in France, Oasis. We develop the existing Oasis fruit characters, which already have a large following on social media, for a more adult audience with this series that combines 3D animation and live action. The third episode in the series, "The Fashion Victim," includes the first 3D rendering of Chris Passion as he pursues the newly single Fran Raspberry.
Each script had to be carefully planned before shooting the live action elements of the series.
Creative Execution
The post-production team of about 60 people used 3DS Max to animate the characters, V-Ray and Photoshop for rendering and textures, and After Effects for compositing. We created a very detailed storyboard ahead of time. The Live action shots were all captured on 11 different sets in just three days, shooting 30 shots per day. After that the workflow was pretty standard: keying, tracking, integration of CG Elements with the HDRI from the shoot, and then refining the integration with compositing. The entire four-part series lasted nine months in all. The various steps in order were:
1 / Pre-production (writing, design, modeling etc.)
2 / Storyboard / Animatics
3 / Animation
4 / Rendering
5 / Compositing
6 / Grading
