Brief Explanation
On August 4th 2006 in Sri Lanka, 17 ACF International aid workers were assassinated, during violent outbreaks in the city of Muttur. Following this attack, ACF International had to bring an end to its work in Sri Lanka. Today, this crime still remains unpunished. The ONG confined us with the task of making the public and the international community aware of these frightening acts.
Beyond the brutal Muttur crime, the ONG's concerns include the overall security of humanitarian aid workers and the dramatic consequences of a crime against them.
Basically, killing an aid worker is punishing those he helps: the #ProtectAidWorkers campaign was born.
On March 27th, more than 7 years later, the Human Rights Council of the United Nations adopted the A/HRC/25/L.1/Rev.1 resolution, which included an international investigation on these crimes.
Creative Execution
To create the animation and the graphic style for the Action Contre La Faim « One bullet » short film, we worked all animations in full 2D.
Although all the work was made with computers, the workflow is totally the same as the old traditional 2D animation process.
All the background were created on photoshop, bigger than the HD format (1920 x 1080) in order to resize easily. The roughs were made with TV Paint and then color was added with Photoshop.
The coloration was made with custom brushes in photoshop, in order to obtain a strong painting effect/render, sometimes close to the knife painting (painting brushwork very present).
The backgrounds were assembled in photoshop with multi layers in order to get a multiplan effect (relative speed and different speed between the first and the last layer/plan depth of field) in the final compositing with After Effect.
The animations were created with TV Paint, a traditional animation 2D software. All the animations were made like in traditional 2D animation (keyframe/posing fields drawing/frames clean). The animations were made at 12 frames/second and sometimes at 24 frames/second for the slowmotion shots. No rotoscoping was made nor was 3D/CGI (Maya / 3D studio Max) used in the animations. For example for the rotations, the slowmotion or the time freeze effect. Everything was made in true/real 2D drawing animation.
