Brief Explanation

In 2012 DELA launched a campaign called ‘Why wait until its too late?’, which inspired people to say something wonderful to their loved ones more often. This campaign was particularly focused on the relationship between relatives. So this year we wanted to go further and show other kinds of special relationships. One theme we wanted to show was a student-teacher relationship. Because teenage students tend to be very hesitant when it comes to taking advice from a grown-up. Especially from a relatively unknown, authority figure like a teacher –whichever situation they are in. However, these high school times have a huge impact on the rest of our lives. Times we could only have endured with a little help of others. But we often only realize how much these people have influenced us when it’s too late. And did we ever get a chance to thank them?

Creative Execution

After an extensive, nationwide search for the right student and teacher, we ended up at the IJburg College. A school that is special in itself. As they don’t just focus on quality education, but especially focus on personal growth. This fitted our quest perfectly. But finding the right setting was only the first part of our search. We still needed to find an ex-student who had a fascinating bond with a teacher. Someone who had started high school vulnerable, but had grown confident enough to open up and share his story in front of numerous cameras. Then after weeks of searching within the school, we found Mark. A now young man who had grown from a shy and somewhat awkward boy into a confident well liked guy – thanks to the support of his mentor. This in-depth documentary is an observational film. In which DELA merely acts as the medium, to tell this touching and real story. Giving Mark a podium to surprise his mentor and show gratitude by saying something wonderful about the impact of this relationship during high school – and many years to after.
