Brief Explanation
The official colours of the European Parliament's political parties do not coincide fully with the local political landscape of Estonia. To encourage younger people to vote, making them think about voting was definitely a task and a clear indicator for the aesthetic. One of the objectives was also to find a way to connect the energetic personality of the host and the displaying method of the graphics.
The Brief
The objective was to design a solution for the European Parliament Elections 2014 live public broadcast by the Estonian national TV-station ETV. The brief primarily focused on the visualisation of infographics that could easily be understood by viewers of all age groups. It was also apparent that the studio design could be tied to the overall concept, which should take into account the length of the live broadcast that lasted for 4 hours. The limitations were the official colours of the parliament parties and the confined studio space.
How the final design was conceived
The final design took into consideration the previous solutions for the election broadcasts and tried to push the boundaries of studio design and displaying methods. The designers wanted to blur the line between graphic elements and the surrounding space. The desks of the hosts and guests are an extension of the graphics and vice versa. We saw the European political parties as an ecosystem that represents different standpoints, visualised by the fragmented graphic elements.
Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market
The outcome has been very successful. The broadcast was the first of its kind with the biggest full-HD LED displays used in Estonian TV history. The production has been published in both print and web, described as a successful project in the leading local design blog, in publications and in social media.
