Brief Explanation
We saw it as our main challenge to make something that both represented the tradition of the craft and an identity that was modern.
The Brief
The task was to make a visual identity for The Queen Sonja Print Award. The foundation was founded by Her Majesty Queen Sonja in 2011. Its purpose was to create interest in graphic art/printmaking and stimulate young artists to develop both the craft and their expression. Every other year the Foundation presents the Queen Sonja Print Award to a young up-and-coming artist.
How the final design was conceived
We spent a lot of time getting to know the art of printmaking. And what facinated us wery much, was that the majority of the tools that are used by artists today, are the same as they were in the 17th century. We based the logo on a key tool among graphic artists; the drum that adds pressure to the matrix, that transfers color pigment to the paper. In this sense, we based the logo on something which is deeply rooted in the craft and that in a simplified execution feels contemporary.
Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market
The new visual identity was launched when Her Majesty presented the 2014 award to Sven-Alland Sørensen in Oslo City Hall. It was very well recieved, and is now to a part of countless exebitions and galleries around the world.
