Brief Explanation
The „Haus der Berge“ in Berchtesgaden represents a harmonious interplay of architecture, exhibition and magnificent surrounding landscape. The exhibition is dedicated to the „vertical wilderness“ between lake Königssee and the summit of mount(ain) Watzmann in the Berchtesgaden national park. Fauna and flora of the biospheres water, forest, „alm“ and rock are presented. Changing light moods, projections and sound installations refer to the four seasons. Employing these approaches the national park comes alive as a vivid landscape.
The Brief
The national park Berchtesgaden is Germany`s only alpine national park. It comprises 21,000 square metres and four different biospheres. The new visitor centre is the first contact point for visitors before entering this unique natural region. It aims to induce curiosity for the adventure of nature and to offer deepening information to this specific ecosystem.
How the final design was conceived
The exhibition is composed as an abstract landscape panorama with spatial elements. Backdrops refer to the four characteristic biospheres of the national park. The route takes the visitor upwards continuously to the summit of the mountain sculpture. Here a panorama film with spectacular images condense the atmosphere of the exhibition. Every 15 minutes, the 10 x 15 metre projection screen opens and reveals a direct view of the national park with ist most famous mountain, the Watzmann. This serves as an invitation to the visitors to now explore the national park themselves.
Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market
The permanent exhibition „vertical wilderness“ is located in the centre of the national park and includes an information site, a centre of education and an outdoor area. All these parts are substantially connected and offer a surprising and andventurous approach towards nature. Yet in the first year of the show „Haus der Berge“ counted almost 100,000 visitors.
