Brief Explanation
In order for people to actually use the website to donate, the process of paying for a tree had to be as easy as possible. So the goal was to make it playful and entertaining, but also to convey how serious the problem of climate change is and how users can help directly on the website.
The Brief
The children’s initiative Plant-for-the-Planet plants trees all over the world to fight the climate crisis. Since the movement was founded by the 9-year-old Felix Finkbeiner, the organisation relies on donations to plant new trees. Therefore the children wanted to completely redesign their website, so that it would reach as many potential supporters as possible.
How the final design was conceived
We wanted to create a way to donate trees, so easy even a child could do it. So we let the children themselves participate from the very beginning, starting with the design process. The idea of a virtual forest was born, where everyone can plant a tree with just one click via drag & drop. Everything was designed and made by children, and all the pieces were meticulously put together to become part of an endlessly extendable digital world. All the interfaces are really easy to use, and all info is visualized with beautifully handcrafted illustrations inspired by the children.
Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market
In its first month after the relaunch, the new website had 67% more unique visitors than the monthly average used to be. The average session time increased from 18 seconds to 4:25 minutes. As a result, the amount of trees donated via the website increased by more than 300%.
