Why is this work relevant for Entertainment?
Danish director Martin de Thurah has combined sculpting, live-action recordings and visual effects with Active Child’s track "Color Me" to create a haunting and visually groundbreaking film. It leaves us wondering how we respond when we have to face our own fears and mortality, and whether it is possible to find tranquility within the world of our nightmares.
Besides the very obvious display of excellent craftsmanship and marvelous creativity, the film also has the purpose of raising awareness about mental health issues, which is supported by the online universe it was released in.
Background
Throughout years of friendship Active Child has regularly sent his upcoming releases to Martin de Thurah, but it was not until "Color Me" struck a nerve with the Danish director that the two joined forces for a visual. After hearing "Color Me" Martin de Thurah created the film from completely free creative association.
The very open brief was to create a piece of visual art that both musician and director would be proud of, and the objective was to both inspire spectators and spark a conversation about anxiety and mental health. This is part of the reason why Martin de Thurah chose to create an inspirational online hub, where the film exists side by side with inspiration, interpretations and conversation starters.
Describe the creative idea
A woman meets her dark double and travels on a nightmarish trip into the fantastical world of her own anxiety.
Describe the strategy
The video was released through the online universe ColorMeProject.com, made by Martin de Thurah as a way of unfolding the universe established in the video.
On the website, visitors can read excerpts from the director's own dreams, download visual assets from the film to create art inspired by the film and buy t-shirts, posters and one-off sculptures made specifically for the film - all proceeds being donated to Mental Heatlh Foundation Denmark.
The film and website was distributed through numerous international media outlets as well as Active Child and Martin de Thurah's own channels.
Describe the execution
On the night before its official release, the film was premiered in front of a select audience in Copenhagen's storied Grand Theatre.
The film and website was released on August 26th. The news of the video's release was shared by international media outlets such as shots, Nakid and Lodown Magazine. Martin de Thurah was interviewed by 1.4 as well as Denmarks biggest film magazine, Ekko.
Since then, the attention surrounding the film has steadily grown, and among other mentions "Color Me" has been selected as a staff curated pick by both Nowness and Vimeo.
Describe the outcome
In less than two months, the video has an accumulated view count of roughly 150.000.
