The film was directed by Douglas Avery and photographed by Andrij Parekh (Blue Valentine, The Zookeepers Wife).
Together they sought to create something experiential, tactile and immersive. They wanted the camera to be an active part of each scene, to create a quasi-point of view, to foster empathy with Lisa’s character.
Douglas explains, “We used wider anamorphic lenses that let us get close to her face, yet still give us context of her environment. We also planned specific motions and actions to create more fluid cuts between time jumps, particularly during her recovery moments”.
Andrij continues, “We discussed an impressionistic and subjective camera; we wanted to bring fourth the hallucinatory experience of what we imagined being in that earthquake was like; the visual lens distortions were emblematic of that approach. All was done ‘in camera’ with the shortest depth of field possible using anamorphic lenses to create an evocativesubjective experience."
