The film was shot on location in Nepal and Thailand. However, only the opening and ending scenes with the schoolchildren were actually shot in Kathmandu. Considering the sensitive nature of the subject all the earthquake scenes were shot in Bangkok.
Authentic Nepalese materials (doors, windows, household objects) were shipped in to recreate the aftermath of the quake… even numerous sacks of red dust, typical of Nepal but uncommon in Thailand.
Lisa’s apartment was built on large-sized rubber tires, allowing the stage to be manipulated manually by the crew; an invention of the production designer Lek Chunsuttiwat (The Impossible, The Avengers).
A gigantic set was built in Pattaya recreating the makeshift hospital where the AXA doctor discovers Lisa. And the repatriation scenes were shot in the U-Tapao Rayong International Airport with a Boeing 737.
The cast and crew consisted of over 300 people… and a canary that’s still happily chirping.
