The Campaign
‘Into The Wild’ is a mixed reality experience that transformed over 10,000 square feet of the Singapore ArtScience Museum into a virtual, interactive rainforest. The aim is to use the power of mixed reality and cutting edge technology to help people in Singapore experience first-hand the devastating effects of deforestation and learn more about some of the region’s most endangered species.
Using the the latest Google Tango technology and Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, the experience is designed so that visitors would follow a loose narrative playing the role of a park ranger whose role is to keep forest safe.
And at the end of it all, Into the Wild becomes a reality when the virtual tree that people can plant as a symbolic act becomes a real tree donated to the Rimbang Baling rainforest (home of the endangered Sumatran tiger) by the project’s sponsors.
Creative Execution
To create Into the Wild we used a combination of the latest technology that allowed the team to accurately map the museum and design the experience without ever visiting the ArtScience Museum. Specifically, we used a combination if:
HTC VIVE & VR DESIGN
We used HTC Vive, Unity, and custom VR design tools to replicate the museum and design the experience from Amsterdam.
UNITY
We built this experience in Unity, a popular and easy-to-use 3D Game Engine.
TANGO
Google Tango powers the experience, using Area Learning to lay the AR and VR elements over the real life space.Tango is an augmented reality computing platform, developed and authored by Google. It uses computer vision to enable mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, to detect their position relative to the world around them without using GPS or other external signals.
LENOVO PHAB 2 PRO
The world’s first Google Tango enabled device brought the exhibition to life.
Within the first month 10,581 visitors tried the experience, walking a collective distance of 1391 KM. Alongside this, more than 50 news stories were secured across arts and culture, tech and lifestyle in global and local publications.
As mapping and coordination is already in place we’re able to regularly update the experience on show, thus allowing the ArtScience museum to continually update their exhibition to keep visitors interested.
Into the Wild is the largest Augmented Reality experience in the world, covering 10,000 square feet of museum space. The project combined technologies such as Google Tango, Lenovo Phab 2 and Unity on a scale never been seen before. Furthermore, the project used HTC VIVE and VR Design in a completely new way so that the team in Amsterdam could work on design and development without ever needed to visit the actual site of the AR experience in Singapore.
