Cultural / Context information for the jury
Without the whole picture, the truth disappears.
Every year, news photographers around the world are threatened, injured and killed in the line of work. This is a serious threat to free press. It is also a threat to the photograph itself, as a vital source for true, impartial and powerful news reporting.
Sweden´s leading newspaper, Expressen, and the largest distributor of papers and magazines, Pressbyrån, joined forces on World Press freedom day in a collaboration with the now world famous photographers Nic Ut, Nilüfer Demir, Jeff Widener and Richard Drew.
On World Press Freedom Day the 3rd of May, these ads were published in the newspaper to highlight the importance of having a photographer in place at the right time, or the rest of the world will never know what happened.
