Background

The COVID pandemic hit the Zurich (Switzerland) nightlife particularly hard. Countless clubs and bars had to close their doors for months. Twice. A sad and challenging situation. Help was needed. That's why we decided to do something to support the Zurich nightlife morally, politically, and financially. And to bring this unique experience into people's homes.

Describe the creative idea (40% of vote)

We wanted to create something that transports the spirit of going out in Zurich as authentically as possible, while also being entertaining and matching the zeitgeist of locked-down Zurich in early 2021. With hundreds of thousands of people going out in Zurich every weekend, there was an abundance of fashionistas, it-girls, dandies, ravers, lovers, and other fantastic humans who were now left stranded with no opportunity to experience Zurich nightlife and no end in sight. Let alone the countless artists, DJs, bar staff, runners, bouncers, cleaning staff and anyone else who contributes to Zurich's rich night entertainment industry who were often left with no job, no salary and in many cases no compensation by the government. We wanted to bring all those people together and create something that everyone feels connected to, something that reminds us of better times and gives hope for a brighter future.

Describe the execution (40% of vote)

Nights out in Zurich can be endless. People roam the streets, swearing the next beer will be the last. We captured this feeling and transformed into a modern nightlife inspired charity game of «Snakes and Ladders». Along with the political representation of Zurich Nightlife, the Bar and Club Commission Zurich (BCK), 11 of the city's most popular bars and clubs were featured in the game. We illustrated it with world-renowned illustrator Kathrin von Niederhäusern and manufactured it locally in a first edition of 500 pieces to further support local business. The game itself – affectionately known as "Züribrätt" (swiss german dialect for «Zurichboard») – comes with a curated, Zurich-themed Spotify Playlist packed with music by local and international artists, as well as its own Instagram filter. And: with endless fun for the good cause, a truckload of Zurich-Love and countless, blurry memories of happy times and good friends.

Within hours after the first post on social media on February 17th, the initial 500 games wer sold out, and not even 12 hours after its launch, a second edition of the game was issued to meet the huge demand. Thanks to the broad (free) media coverage in Newspapers, TV and Radio in the days following the launch, the campaign spread like wildfire. By February 28th, a total of well over 2,500 games had been sold – more than five times the projected sales. The result: a staggering 72,000 Swiss francs have been raised and donated to the BCK, and our game became a strong statement in support of Zurich nightlife. The by now iconic board game has found its way into thousands of homes and keeps appearing on social media to this day. A wonderful story, a huge success.
