Write a short summary of what happens in the film
On New Year’s Eve, the protagonist relives all the highs and lows of her special 2020 by scrolling through her WhatsApp family chat, as if it were a diary. We see her being pregnant in the midst of a pandemic, her little siblings going through the emotional struggles of being so isolated from the world, her father trying keep the family together while feeling so helpless watching them suffer and of course her old grandmother having to be alone through all of it with WhatsApp as the only gateway to her family. Despite the hardship and frustration, the protagonist though also remembers the support and closeness of her family. She realizes that even in a really tough year like this, where we had to stay apart from the people we love the most, it’s the bond we shared that got us through.
Cultural / Context information for the jury
The year 2020 was drawing to a close and most people had not even been able to process all that had happened to them this year. A completely new life situation, fear of the unknown, grief, new insights, but also a strong sense of community shaped this year like no other. In the process, WhatsApp wrote bittersweet record figures as far as digital message exchange was concerned. For this reason, WhatsApp wanted to wish the world a happy, hopefully better, New Year and at the same time remind us how important connection between loved ones is in such times.
Tell the jury about the choice of music track.
The song by Caribou emphasizes how important family is for the protagonists. Throughout the film we subtly hear the most important emotion of the year: "I can't do without you". Many people can identify with that. So, it was a conscious decision to forego the slow piano music typically used for this kind of film and instead to rely on a song that clearly emphasizes the emotional message of the film.
