Write a short summary of what happens in the film
The cartoon features Grisou, a cat who realizes that it is the big day of the summer vacation. He panics as he sees his adopting family getting ready and thinks back to the time his previous family abandoned him just before the holidays. In the end, all is well that ends well: his owners take him on vacation with them.
Cultural / Context information for the jury
In France animal associations usually communicate by shocking the general public. We decided that the SPA should instead adopt a positive communication, and also break the creative codes by using a cartoon rather than a film.
Moreover, when it comes to the abandonment of animals in France, it is very often dogs that come to mind first. We imagine a brave doggie tied to a tree at the edge of the forest or to the lamppost of a parking lot, under a gray sky, and quietly waiting for his master to come back to look for him ... Although this image is a reality, cats are still ranked in France number one in terms of abandonment.
Tell the jury about type(s) of animation used and summarise any relevant challenges or techniques.
The technical challenge on this project was to obtain a character that was both endearing and expressive in order to seduce a very large audience while leaving us a lot of possibility and freedom on the 2D animation. We also had to find an AD in agreement with this character-design. By thinking from the beginning of the pre-production about the different light effects in the film, the integration of the character in his environment was almost immediate and coherent.
