Write a short summary of what happens in the film
The story of the real Santa Clause is the story of a young boy finding his destiny. We first meet him in a school for magically gifted children. But for some reasons he seems to be the only one in class without special abilities. He is just a small boy with a big beard and a weird “ho, ho, ho” laugh. Ridiculed and mobbed he runs away, he packs his bag and escapes to the woods, where he meets a reindeer with a glowing nose. In a farm house the two meet a little girl. Our hero gives her his teddy bear and learns about the power of gifts – when in return she leads the two into a shed to stay for the night. Ho ho ho! Our hero laughs in joy and suddenly everything levitates …also the old sleigh that is stowed away in here. Santa is born!
Cultural / Context information for the jury
The question “who is Santa” is as old as Christmas. And until now there has not been an answer magical enough to inspire children. No tale that would live up to the grandeur of Santa as a person. That’s why we decided to come up with the ultimate Christmas gift – and explain Santa’s existence once and for all in an animated movie worthy of this task. This lovingly animated film with allusions to stop-trick classics is a sequel of sorts and comes five years after “The real easter bunny” which explained the existence of a mystical creature – a hare laying eggs – to millions of children around the world.
Provide the full film script in English.
We open on snowy mountains. It’s a dark, clear, moon-lit night. On top of one of the mountains we see a mysterious building: towers, big walls, gates…what is that? We cut to the squeaking gate of the building, where a sign reads: SCHOOL FOR MAGICAL CHILDREN.
Next, we cut to inside one of the classes – a normal classroom, but filled with extraordinary children. One can fly. Another one can spit fire. And the next one is just plain invisible. Finally the camera lands on an awkward boy in the last row, looking sad. Nothing magical about him, is it? When the invisible boy steals his cookies the awkward boy lets out a tired “ho ho ho”, when suddenly he is hit by a paper ball – and is so starled by the impact that a big, puffy, white beard pops out of his hoodie. Everyone in class laughs. Our little boy tears up. This is obviously how things are for him…every day.
We cut to the dormitory, where he is alone eating cookies and drinking milk. Some other kids bang on the doors, imitating his laugh: ho, ho, ho! They shriek with laughter. Our boy looks desperate…his head hanging low. Until he makes up his mind: no more bullying! He is out of here. He packs his teddy bear into his backpack and runs off.
Next we see him running through the dark woods. The trees, the shadows –everythings seems to have eyes. He is scared by every little crack and every tiny movement. What has he done…? And now he actually hears something come out of the dark. Something breathes heavily….an animal? He turns around in horror. What is that red “ball” hanging there in mid air? Finally, illuminated by the moonlight, he sees a cute baby reindeer standing in front of him, the animal’s nose glowing red. Our boy feeds him a cookie: Two outcasts in the middle of nowhere. Want to be friends? Yes…the two are hugging. This is the first time our hero experiences the power of gifting…
Cut to a small farm house. Our boy and his reindeer look at each other…they do need a place to stay for the night after all.
Bam, bam, bam – we see our hero knock on the door. No answer. That’s when he looks up the chimney. Hmm….
Cut. He is climbing the chimney – who would have thought he could do that? He climbs in…and falls down the chimney to finally land inside a living room with a big thud. Again his big white beard pops out. Cut to little feet coming down the stairs: a little girl has been awakened by the weird rumbling. Who’s there? It’s a little boy with a white beard climbing out of the fireplace. What…? Understandably, the little girl is afraid. Our hero acts quickly: he reaches and into his backpack and gives her his teddy bear. Awww – the little girl hugs the bear. And next: our boy, who is absolutely surprised by her reaction.
Cut into a dark barn. The gate is being opened and silhouetted against the moonlight we see the little girl and our boy standing in the doorway. The boy has a pillow in his hand. Obviously the little girl offered him and his reindeer a place to stay and sleep.
Hmm…our hero looks around. The happy girl. The reindeer. A sleigh that is stowed away in here…and suddenly: everything starts to makes sense! Eureka! Ho, ho, ho – he laughs, proud for the first time in his life and full of joy. Everything in the room starts to levitate. Pure magic! Finally! Santa Clause is born,
As we see him fly across the sky, now already with all of his legendary reindeers, we hear a voice-over:
“The biggest gift: helping little children. For over five we’ve been supporting the Peter Maffay foundation and children in need. Netto wishes you a merry Christmas!
