Write a short summary of what happens in the film
The story of the real Santa Clause is the story of a young boy finding his destiny. We first meet him in a school for magically gifted children. But for some reasons he seems to be the only one in class without special abilities. He is just a small boy with a big beard and a weird “ho, ho, ho” laugh. Ridiculed and mobbed he runs away, he packs his bag and escapes to the woods, where he meets a reindeer with a glowing nose. In a farm house the two meet a little girl. Our hero gives her his teddy bear and learns about the power of gifts – when in return she leads the two into a shed to stay for the night. Ho ho ho! Our hero laughs in joy and suddenly everything levitates …also the old sleigh that is stowed away in here. Santa is born!
Cultural / Context information for the jury
The question “who is Santa” is as old as Christmas. And until now there has not been an answer magical enough to inspire children. No tale that would live up to the grandeur of Santa as a person. That’s why we decided to come up with the ultimate Christmas gift – and explain Santa’s existence once and for all in an animated movie worthy of this task. This lovingly animated film with allusions to stop-trick classics is a sequel of sorts and comes five years after “The real easter bunny” which explained the existence of a mystical creature – a hare laying eggs – to millions of children around the world.
Tell the jury about the creation of the original music track.
Writing the music was a truly global process:
The German songwriters Simon Heeger &/ Christian Vorländer shared their ideas with the dutch arranger Thomas Muis. After finding the perfect lyrics, they shared the layout with 7-year-old Emma who’s based in Los Angeles. She recorded the vocals remotely with her dad and sent it back to 2WEI in Germany to finish the production.
Both in recording and mixing the song the idea was to keep imperfections in order to underpin the vulnerability of the film’s main character – as if it was little Santa himself commenting from the off.
