Cultural / Context information for the jury
Vepsäläinen is Finland's best known design furniture retailer, representing globally known brands like Fritz Hansen, Vitra and Hästens. Their target group is "design enthusiasts" – people, who take pride in understanding the value of design and in being connoisseurs of different design brands and products.
However, less known is the fact, that Vepsäläinen is also an official partner of the Finnish Olympic Team. To promote the partnership during the Tokyo Summer Games, Vepsäläinen designed Finnish Olympic team's lounge at the Olympic village and launched a series of print ads featuring different Olympic sports in images built from design furniture. Each print ad ran in a national newspaper on the same day as the sport in question was competed in Tokyo.
Tell the jury about the art direction.
You’re looking at a chair, but thinking of sports. The illusion is created by in-depth understanding of sports culture and design language in art direction and by outstanding craftsmanship in photography.
We wanted to create a series of ads that honour the glorious history of Olympics in style and in the highest possible quality of work. We explored some of the most photographed design classics and found a whole new approach on their visual representation - without losing a bit of visual recognizability of the classics. Iconic photographs from the history of the Olympics were one of the essential sources of inspiration for the style we were looking for.
Undeniably the most well-known visual symbol of the Olympics, the Olympic Rings, form a visual motif that binds the five independent executions of the series together: in every single execution there’s one of the five colours of the Olympic Rings present.
