Cultural / Context information for the jury
The EU awards the title “European Capital of Culture” once a year to at least two cities of great cultural potential. All candidate cities were called upon to submit a Final Bid Book. The application book from the winning German city of Chemnitz captures the spirit of the application, which focuses on a typical Chemnitz do-it-yourself mentality: It comes as a pragmatic clip-on folder with a simple gray cardboard cover and colorful embroidery on the spine and is intended to be reminiscent of a tinkerer's notebook. Its inner workings are as exciting as the city of Chemnitz at second glance: a screen print asks the question: “Why are you here?” and also gives some answers, hinged chapter openers re-stage garages, there are colored illustrations, “handwritten” notes, a cultural program reminiscent of a periodic table, a glued-in sound tool, various maps and newspaper articles.
