Using AI and machine learning, we made a musical experiment. We wanted to see how long the development of artificial intelligence has come, and if it's possible to replace an artist in the near future. We “fed” an AI with the music catalog of Norway's favorite artist ARY and trained it for a month. Curiously waiting to see if the AI could compose a completely new melody and lyric with the signature of ARY. We later released the song to Spotify and youtube, and additionally a film explaining the experiment.

Cultural / Context information for the jury
The research festival “Forskningsdagene” is a national, annual festival under the auspices of the research council of Norway. Since the start in 1995 their goal has been to make young adults enthusiastic about research, and hopefully contribute to the recruitment of research-related professions. The theme of this year's festival was “Peace & Conflict”, and right now we are on the brink of a conflict that may affect the lives of all young adults - the conflict of man vs. machine. How many jobs will be affected? When will your job be replaced? And can Artificial Intelligence even replace something so human as creativity?

Please outline the innovative elements of the work
This creative idea is based on a musical experiment, where the AI is both the core of the idea and the execution. This is an experimental idea that may change the way we think about music. Teaming up with researchers from the University of Oslo and giving them a month to make an AI compose a song. They used “machine learning” to train the AI based on ARY’s music catalogue.
We asked ourself “Can artificial intelligence replace something as human as creativity?”.
Artificial intelligence is one of our times biggest breakthroughs, so complex that we don't yet know the consequences of its existence. We wanted to test how far we could push this technology. And the subject of experimentation? Something young adults care about - music.
