Describe the creative idea
Space Safari, a 360° VR project, blasts the user into space and gives them a unique view over planet Earth from hundreds of kilometres away.
The project aims to enable more people to experience the “overview effect”, a powerful phenomenon commonly described by astronauts when they see the Earth from afar. They report a strengthened perspective of the Earth as a fragile system, and a renewed sense of responsibility to preserve and maintain our shared home.
The experience is narrated by Helen Sharman, the first British astronaut to travel into space. It is also available with narration from astronauts Mike Massimino (US), Andreas Mogensen (DK) and Ewald Reinhold (GER).
Describe the execution
This project was created to be viewed on the Oculus Go and to be distributed on Social Media.
The idea was developed and produced over ten months. The 360-degree video footage was obtained by flying a drone to the highest altitude permitted by regulations, and it was shot with a Kandao Obsidian. As you pass through the clouds, we switch to 3D rendered imagery. This is created from over 100 layers of composited effect, models and animations using a combination of the below software: Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Autodesk Maya, Unity, Substance Designer, Substance Painter, V-Ray, Mocha Pro, Fusion 16, and more.
As with the help of a virtual reality headset, Space Safari creates the experience of traveling into space and orbiting the Earth as it floats in space in all its fragile beauty. The virtual reality experience seeks to imitate what astronauts call the ‘overview effect’, a perspective and sense of belonging that occurs when the planet is viewed from hundreds of kilometres away. This is important as it will help people engage with our vision to create a world that runs entirely on green energy.
