Write a short summary of what happens in the film

The Shape focuses on freedom of expression, both for media and citizens, as enshrined within Article 11 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. To explore this theme, the film uses the metaphor of a mysterious black shape, hovering over a village. As the cloud engulfs the village, media such as TV, computer, newspapers, and arts like books and music, are destroyed by the darkness. This is until a girl stands up and reads Paul Eluard’s poem Liberty, causing the black clouds to recede.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

The movie intended to remind the EU citizens that the fundamental rights - freedom of expression and media plurality - that we tend to take for granted can disappear easily. It was especially important to communicate about this in the run-up to the European elections in the summer of 2019. The challenge is to trigger interest and generate a better-informed opinion about the EU, inspire a sense of belonging and joint responsibility on the EU’s core values. 1 https://www.euractiv.com/section/justice-home-affairs/news/europes-media-freedom-increasingly-under-attack-report-warns/
