Breastfeeding can be time-consuming, painful, and often frustrating. However, the biggest barrier for young mothers is the often-uncomfortable social situations when breastfeeding in public or when being with family or friends. Even when fully aware of the benefits of breastfeeding their new-born child, these mothers remain reluctant simply because of the fear of evoking weird looks and reactions. That is a shame. Knowing that breastfeeding is the most natural and healthy way to feed a baby, it should not be something that can only be done behind closed doors. All Belgians – both young mothers as well as others – need to see breastfeeding for what it is: the most normal way to feed a baby.
