Cultural / Context information for the jury

The Hyundai NEXO is powered using the latest hydrogen fuel cell technology, differentiating it from other modes of sustainable mobility such as electric and hybrid vehicles. The NEXO has no tailpipe emissions, except for the purified air and water it expels.

Please outline the innovative elements of the work

The Hyundai NEXO is hydrogen powered and emits nothing but air and water, making it one of the cleanest vehicles on the road. This is what we wanted to highlight, so we partnered with Berlin creative studio, Neulant van Exel, to create a one-of-a-kind bubble machine, custom designed and built to fit on the tailpipes of the NEXO. Following rounds of feasibility testing, the bubble machine was 3D printed and attached to the rear of the NEXO with magnets; the motor housed inside the bubble machine itself was powered by the car’s fuel cell, spinning the in-built bubble wands which blew the bubbles using air discharged from the moving car. Additionally, Neulant van Exel tested 30 different types of wildflower seeds, all of which are native to the local region, to ensure they could be transported inside bubbles.
