Tell the jury about type(s) of animation used and summarise any relevant challenges or techniques.
The film contains an animated section which is made up of over 600 unique embroidered
frames, a feat never before attempted at this scale and level of detail. To achieve this, we
made a complete animated film. Each frame of that film was then painstakingly
programmed into an embroidery machine, embroidered, and then photographed and run
together to create an embroidered animated film. One challenge we faced was to work
within the confines of what an embroidery machine can produce. For example, the
majority of frames could use only six different thread colours, which informed our initial
animation. We also used different techniques within embroidery such as appliqué and puff
embroidery, and even the plastic from real footballs.
Write a short summary of what happens in the film
Inside a mysterious factory, an ancient machine weaves an intricate tapestry. The tapestry
takes over the screen, as an animated section begins, in which every frame you see is
itself painstakingly embroidered. What then unfolds is a chronological retelling of some the
great tournament’s most iconic moments. The film then looks ahead to the 2018 FIFA
World Cup, featuring some of the players who were poised to make a difference in the
coming tournament. The film is soundtracked by a specially-arranged version of Russian
folk song Oche Chernye, performed by Sir John Tomlinson.
