« Choose Life » We hear the VO of the opening scene of Trainspotting. The beat of the music and the modern VO contrasts with the setting of Ancient Greece. The edit is fast and dynamic. As in Trainspotting, the scene opens with a shot of our hero’s feet (leather sandals), as he runs down a dusty market street in Athens BC 400. Choose life. Alexios is running trough a traditionnal greek market. Choose a job. We introduce Stephanos from the front as he runs, much like Ewan McGregor in Trainspotting. Choose a career We see Stephanos being chased by soldiers. He’s in trouble and needs to shake them off. Just like in the movie, Alexios runs away from pursuing authority. Choose a family. In an alley a girl sees that he is pursued and wants to help him. She spills chestnuts to bring down the guards. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Stephanos jumps up on a wall… He climbs up on the roof of a house and jumps over the rooftops. He passes a few women hanging the laundry. They like what they see. Choose a three-piece suite on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Camera booms up and reveals we overlook an ancient Greek city with the deep blue Mediterranean ocean glimmering in a distance. It’s now first that we know where we are. A huge statue stands guard in the harbor. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players… Cut to black. A torch gets lit and lights up a store filled floor to ceiling with all kinds of junk from that time period. It is a caricature of the era’s consumer society. Quick cuts to see shelves full of, fabric, pots, clothes and weapons. An Ancient Greece version of modern day consumption. Constrasting the VO with this periods version. Stephanos grabsa fine axe from a wall to hit the next VO line… … and electrical tin openers. We come across Stephanos repeatedly striking an enormous opponent’s armour with the axe, trying to cleave him in two. The axe cuts the armor but doesn’t penetrate all through. The giant man stares dumbfounded at his damaged armor as Stephanos grabs his arm bites it. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. …Stephanos chrashes into some rubble. Timing the voice over Stephanos spits out a couple of teeth and groans in pain “dental insurance”. Choose fixed interest mortage repayments. Down in the harbour. We see ships of the time anchored in the bay. Stephanos, receives some gold coins from a fat, pathetic looking merchant. Stephanos looks at him as to say “where is the rest?”. With the lack of response, Stephanos grabs the pouch . The merchant pretends being surprised it was there and tries laugh it off. Choose a starter home. Stephanos sits beside his campfire overlooking the sea from a high cliff. The sun has just set and the sky slowly fades. He watches the stars before going to sleep. Lightning and a loud thunder. The perfect evening wasn’t so perferct after all. The rain starts to pour down. Stephanos is getting drenched. Choose your friends. Alexios sit prisoner inside a large cage on a horse wagon crossing a mountain pass. Next to him sit four miserable prisoners. They are toothless, and suffers from the plague. One guy is chewing on a dead animal that looks like roadkill. He offers a peace to Stephanos who declines politely. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. On a beautiful beach, Alexios comes out of the water. In the water at a hundred meters you can see a warship on fire. Then we move into a fast and visual montage. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Alexios is stumbling through a desert. He’s dying of thirst. He turns a rock and finds a larva and eats it. Alexios is riding a horse. He is standing in front of the medusa cave with a torch. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissin your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Alexios is on top of a cliff. He fights against several enemies Suddenly he lets himself fall into the void, such as the Assassins. Choose your future. Choose life. The title appears : CHOOSE YOUR FATE.

Write a short summary of what happens in the film

Rebellion knows no age or era. The film Choose Life is set in Ancient Greece, in 431 BC during the Peloponnesian War, and introduces viewers to Alexios, the rebellious hero in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Drawing a parallel between the game and Trainspotting’s notorious opening sequence seemed like an obvious choice to introduce this unconventional hero, who must make the right choices to survive his era’s violence, plotting and power-struggles.

Cultural/Context information for the jury

Over the past three years, teams at Ubisoft studios have been creating an exciting new chapter for the Assassin’s Creed® franchise. The latest instalment—Assassin’s Creed Odyssey—takes players on an epic journey through Ancient Greece, inviting them to forge their own destiny. It is up to you, the player, to choose which of the many paths you will take through a rich world that is constantly evolving around you. But as the Oracle of Delphi would say—be warned—every choice you make will have consequences.
