Tell the jury about the elements of sound design.
We recorded 1000 audio clips of the sounds of the machines, and compiled a mind-blowing yet majestic version of the Finlandia hymn. In the middle of the most beautiful and iconic Finnish scenery, we shot more than 300 video clips of the machines in front of a working-class conductor.
All this was then compiled into a video that was published on YouTube on the eve of the 100th independence day.
Write a short summary of what happens in the film
Made for the 100th independence day of Finland, in a collaboration between two big Finnish companies, our viral video is a unique remake of the national hymn Finlandia: played by Ponsse forest machines, oiled up with Neste renewable oils. It is a tribute for Finnish work, the builder of our country, with Finnish workers as the musicians and our world-class innovations as the instruments.
Set at the Finnish heartland, in the middle of a forest, our layman conductor begins the show with a question you can’t shake off: “Do you want to hear how we play Finlandia with forest machines?” After which the mechanical orchestra is being mounted by the laymen musicians aka experienced foresters.
A minute and half later, after the crescendo, we get a bow from our conductor along with the taglines related to the campaign supporting Finnish work, which was launched with this hero video.
Cultural/Context information for the jury
Finlandia’s composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) is a national hero and one of Finland’s most famous exports – he is arguably the greatest Finnish composer ever, and perhaps one of the best examples of late Romanticism you can find.
The Finlandia hymn was the piece that got Sibelius noticed. It was effectively a nationalistic call for Russia to keep its hands off Finland. (And of course fans of Die Hard 2 will remember it as the closing music of the film.)
We wanted to create a message that speaks to every Finn. Sibelius’ world-famous hymn has a special place in the heart of every Finn. It is played in every Finnish household on the independence day.
The set was also chosen for its cultural significance: a view in which any Finn finds their heart at home. As were the musicians and their machinery: Finland is basically built on wood industry.
